An illustrated story about love & broth, for parents who believe in warm stories that nourish the soul, and the belly.

“This story came to me with my first born in my hands. with all my experiences and years of learning, i wanted to make sure i give him the best start, and to share that with you too”

If you’re unsure where to begin with introducing solids, a homemade broth or stock can be one of the gentlest starting points. Made from high-quality, pasture-raised ingredients, it’s naturally nourishing and easy on your baby’s developing digestive system.

Slow-cooked broths are rich in easily absorbed nutrients, including silica—a trace mineral that supports bone health—along with collagen, amino acids such as glycine and proline, and essential vitamins and minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Together, these nutrients help support early growth and development while remaining soothing and simple to digest.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, broth is also valued for its ability to strengthen Qi, or vital energy. Its warming, calming qualities are believed to help restore balance, making it especially supportive
during periods of growth and transition in early childhood.

“Farex, with ingredients including ground rice, vegetable oil, mineral iron, vitamin C, and an antioxidant, was the first go-to food for infants, created in 1934 by Glaxo Smith Klein, then purchased in the 1990’s by Kraft/Heinz, and is now largely disappeared from retail.

It is a far cry from BROTH.

When I had my first-born son, who is now in his late 30s and as happy and healthy as any mum hopes for her children, I was a ‘thinking mum’ and looked at the ingredients and couldn’t imagine it could be healthy.  My concerns were: arsenic in the rice, elemental iron that I could pull out with a magnet, a refined vegetable oil that was either GMO and/or sprayed with glyphosate, and synthetic vitamin C. The antioxidant listed was probably rosemary extract, a renamed product that was dubious at best.

Despite this disturbing ingredients list, dietitians, paediatricians, and specialists prescribed Farex as the first food for 4- to 6-month-olds. This outdated guidance lives on in other iron-fortified cereals as a baby’s first food. Despite this, we are now seeing fewer of these products in stores, which makes me think mothers are realising the deception and lies perpetrated by them and questioning their beliefs about them. These foods are losing shelf space in supermarkets, and mums are turning instead to real foods for their babies.

After too many decades of Farex, we now have ‘thinking mums’, like Bridget, giving rich, wholesome broths as a first food, to promote health, strength, acuity, and a strong immune system.  Broths are studied, and if you type the words "Bone Broth" into PubMed, you will have 349 results, which include information on the efficacy, nutritional profile, and benefits not only for infants but for all ages.

In this modern world, many environmental chemicals from agriculture and the food industry are exposed to our children. There are some things we cannot control, but many we can. Choosing to feed your baby wholesome, real foods can give them not only the best start in life but also long-lasting health into childhood.

As you can see in this beautiful children’s book by Bridget, you dictate the palate of your child by the foods you consume and the foods you give them to eat.  Start reading this to your child as you introduce their first foods at 6 months and make them a ‘Broth Baby.’”

“Bone broth is one of the oldest foods in human history: mineral-rich, gut-healing, and deeply nourishing, and it belongs at the very beginning of a child's relationship with food. In thirty years of clinical practice, I have watched this ancient wisdom quietly return to the kitchens of mothers who sense, instinctively, that real nourishment begins with the simplest things. Bridget is one of those mothers, and also a nutritionist and teacher who understands that wisdom lands best when it is with warmth and clarity rather than complexity. What she has created here is both a beautiful illustrated story for young children and a genuinely useful resource for the mothers reading it to them, a rare and lovely combination. May Broth Baby find its way into many hands and many kitchens.”

“Broth Baby is a beautiful and thoughtfully written book that introduces families to the profound benefits of using bone broth as a first food. It offers a grounded, nourishing approach to early nutrition—one that honours both tradition and modern understanding of what growing bodies truly need. Bridget brings a rare combination of clinical expertise and lived experience to this work. As a clinical nutritionist, she has applied her deep understanding of whole-food principles in raising her own children, with a clear focus on nutrient density, digestibility, and supporting optimal development from the very beginning. In this book, she generously shares that knowledge in a way that is both accessible and deeply practical for families. From a developmental perspective, the foundations laid in early infancy play a critical role in shaping not only physical growth but also neurological function, immune resilience, and long-term health outcomes. Nourishing, bioavailable foods such as bone broth provide essential building blocks during this window of rapid growth, supporting the developing gut, connective tissue, and nervous system. It has been a privilege to care for Bridget’s children from birth as their family chiropractor, and to witness firsthand the vitality, resilience, and robust health of her boys. They are a true reflection of the care, intention, and nourishment that underpin Bridget’s approach.

This book is a meaningful contribution for any parent seeking to support their children’s health from the very beginning, and a reminder that simple, time-honoured practices can have a profound impact.”
